Love, Ren Hang

Exhibition - Paris

The European House of Photography pays tribute to Ren Hang, the most influential Chinese artist of his generation, through “Love, Ren Hang”. This unprecedented exhibition of the artist addresses all the artistic aspects of the work he left behind. Died in 2017, Ren Han questions the relationship to identity and sexuality in this retrospective. Particularly popular with Chinese youth, the subversive artist boldly destabilized the morals of his country.

Often censored or qualified as pornographic, his work composed essentially of portraits, landscapes and nudes was the fruit of a desire for freedom. It refers in particular to “cynical realism”, a post-Tian'anmen Chinese artistic movement launched in 1989. Offering a selection of 150 prints, the exhibition shows us unpublished works that had never been exhibited by a French institution. Through a chromatic approach, the visitor dives into the different worlds of the artist, passing from red and acid colors to darker notes in reference to nocturnal photographs.
