PORTRAIT

Sacha Goldberger is the French photographer of fabricated stories. Raised in a family where we didnt do anything like everyone else, he established the gap as a way of life. Sacha Goldberger started out  as a creative at CLM BBDO, Philippe Michels advertising agency. In the artistic direction of many advertising campaigns, he then launched as a freelance. At the Gobelins, he trained in photography and accompanied many photographers: a real skill was born. Sacha is inspired by the greatest, such as Erwin Olaf or Gregory Crewdson. We recognize in him scattered landmarks linked to Flemish painting as well as to contemporary art. Sacha Goldberger is also the author-photographer of a large number of photographic books: Made in love, I love you quite simply or Mamika: The best, the fruit of a great love story between the artist and his grandmother, his most precious role model. Adept at shifting, he makes it a point of honor to cultivate fantasy. His work is always written, built and thought out rigorously, the touch of madness comes after. Because there is always in Sacha this effort to divert everyday life. The artist's work was also the subject of a retrospective in 2016 at the Gare dAusterlitz. There are many of his series, including Super Flemish: his work on superheroes whom he makes wear 17th century clothes, in the style of Flemish painting of the time. A real temporal disorder, Sacha Goldberger explores characters that go back to childhood, and reappropriates them, bringing them back into the lap of Art History. It tends to confront these tutelary figures of contemporary American mythology with the eyes of the painters of the Flemish school. Sacha Goldberger visits various photographic worlds, while keeping in mind the idea of telling stories. He presents himself as an anti-reporter, especially in the series opposite, named: Secret Eden. A real game of hide and seek is then played. The artist fabricates indiscretions, provokes low masses, inspires curiosities. Like a director, Sacha chooses places, costumes, directs the actors and the lights, crosses the eras and attaches himself to the details, but he leaves to those who rub shoulders with his worlds, the pleasure of finishing, or not, the story, the soap opera. The visit to these unmentionable Edens is private. Sacha Goldberger photographs real open scenarios of adventures that are hatched behind our backs.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

How would a close friend of yours define your style ?
I think that those close to me find me creative, that's what best defines me, as well as my constant search for aesthetics… Perhaps also a certain shift.

For once, your real superhero  in life?
Surely it's a bit expected, but my grandmother. She went through so many events : during the war with my grandfather they saved 11 people, she survived the Nazis, the Communists… We could make a movie of her life. Me, I take pictures of it (Mamika editor).

The ultimate lack of taste, for you, what is it?
The total look whatever it is. I like mixtures, the unexpected.

Your main quality?
Undoubtedly the imagination, the desire to tell stories, to surprise.

Your influences, in terms of photo?
I am mainly influenced by painting : Hopper, Rembrandt, the Flemings in general. In photos, I particularly appreciate Roversi, Shore, Avedon, Tim Walker, Nadav Kander, the Indian Dayanita Singh.
