PORTRAIT

Vijat Mohindra is the neo-pop photographer of ultra-modernism and hyper-synthetic aestheticism. Born in Ohio, he now lives and works in Los Angeles. Vijat Mohindra studied photography and graduated from the legendary Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In his highly constructed sets, Mohindra chooses the strongest colors in the color spectrum. Royal blue, apple red, canary yellow: these (hyper)saturated colors are recognized by the artist for their dynamism and audacity. The colors of his photographs are as unnatural as the hallucinogenic tableaux he constructs for the range of his subjects. It presents portraits in primary colors, transcendental icons with artificial bodies revealed in a world of super-modernity that pushes us out of our own. The dazzling, anti-truth style of her work has attracted a celebrity clientele such as Miley Cyrus, Nicole Richie, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Rihanna, Dita Von Teese and many more.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

What is the nude in todays photography for you?

I believe that the nude is the most beautiful form of the person. Western culture tends to cover and dress the body as a form of self-expression, but I find whats behind, whats underneath, much more aesthetically interesting. I like to present the nude in its highly “polie” manner, such as in fashion or advertising campaigns.

How do you create your backgrounds?

I love vintage interior decorations. So I try to bring that aesthetic into my work. Instead of finding places, I like to build my own scenographies where I can bring to life all kinds of styles, old and forgotten decorations of the past. I like that my work makes feel this artificial and synthetic dimension. This is why I never include plants, greenery or any other reference to organic matter in my work.

To be a photographer, is it to be a voyeur?

I think photography is very voyeuristic, but the kind of art I create  is regulated and controlled like a painter. Every detail is meticulously planned to create my own point of view.
